Texas Lawyers for Children (“TLC”) (formerly Texas Loves Children), the Child Protection Connection of Texas, is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to improve case outcomes for abused and neglected children by enhancing the quality of legal services they receive, by raising public awareness, and by facilitating improvement in systems that serve children and families. In TLC’s Education Advocate Project, TLC recruits, trains, and supports volunteer attorneys to serve as Education Advocates for foster children, with a focus on ensuring each foster child’s educational needs are being met and challenges created by the instability of the foster care system are overcome in order for the child to achieve academic success.
Our involvement: The Marty Tomberg Charitable Fund has financially supported this organization.
Projects We Support
Education Advocate Project Expansion
TLC’s Education Advocate Project started as an original Dallas-based pilot project in the 305th Judicial District Court to improve the education outcomes for foster children/youth in that Court. In a year, we had great success with this project. Due to the success, TLC is now expanding to include other courts to serve more foster children. It is TLC’s hope that once the project has been successfully operating in Dallas and Tarrant Counties, it can be effectively replicated in other counties across Texas to benefit foster children statewide.
For the Education Advocate Project, TLC recruits, trains, and supports volunteer attorneys to serve as Education Advocates for foster children. The Education Advocates are appointed as co-counsel to the child’s court appointed attorney, and their role is to focus solely on the educational aspects of the child and take actions to ensure the child’s academic success.
