Cloud Forest Organics is leading cloud forest recovery from its 170-acre pilot site in Ecuador’s upper Amazon. Through pioneering research and the restoration of deforested pasture-land, we are creating replicable models to prevent the loss of Earth’s most at-risk forests. Megadiverse, resilient, and full of discoveries to-be-made, these forests are the indispensable sacred headwaters of the Amazon, where clouds become water and flow downstream to feed the Amazon basin. We are building the world’s first cloud forest recovery center, the Crystal Frog Research Center, where leading researchers are discovering new species, testing and improving reforestation models, and building the tools to heal and restore the world’s cloud forests.
Cloud Forest Organics works in partnership with Fundación Jocotoco, an influential Ecuadorian nonprofit organization that protects and manages a network of reserves covering more than 120,000 acres (50,000 ha) and cooperatively manage an additional 188,000 acres (76,000 ha) of private and communal reserves, totaling an area larger than New York City. The Jocotoco Conservation Foundation, a US tax-exempt non-profit organization, is raising money for the Cloud Forest Organics project. Crystal Frog Research Center: a Living Laboratory for Cloud Forest Recovery in the Upper Amazon
With support from Tomberg Family Philanthropies, we are building a research and discovery laboratory to equip the Crystal Frog Research Center with the scientific tools for researchers to study the flora and fauna on-site. The Center is inaccessible by road – an intentional decision which protects over 600 acres of primary cloud forest. From studying the role of mycelium – complex fungal networks which allow trees to communicate – in cloud forest restoration to discovering new methods for recovering disappearing tree species or studying medicinal properties of tree bark and mushrooms, the Center is already a hotspot of innovative cloud forest knowledge production.
Support Dates: April, 2026 – Ongoing
