Funding Area: Education
Congo Education Partners (CEP) was established in 2013 to build the capacity of Djolu Technical College (DTC). DTC is the only accredited technical college providing programs in agricultural and environmental science in Tshuapa Province, a remote and poverty-stricken region the size of England that encompasses vast swaths of intact rainforest and all or part of five nature reserves. The College, founded and led by Congolese, is a regional center for excellence in education, research, and community outreach in sustainable agriculture, forest conservation, and nursing and public health.
Projects We Support
Illuminating College Classes in the Congo Rainforest: Djolu Technical College
Located in the heart of the Congo rainforest, DTC, the only accredited technical college in an area the size of England, trains future ecologists to care for their surrounding rainforest. The education and outreach that DTC provides to the people of Tshuapa Province is not only filling an education gap, but is also a conduit for wider community development. The students come from low income rural families. By developing local expertise in regenerative agriculture, conservation, and public health, DTC provides people in the region with the tools and strategies they need to develop sustainable livelihoods and preserve their rainforest and its vast biodiversity for future generations.
The Illuminating College Classes in the Congo Rainforest: Djolu Technical College project purpose is to connect students and faculty with academic resources and timely information via the digital world, and provide lighting for night classes and studying. The overall plan to upgrade the technology of DTC and its satellite campuses is a large project. The central DTC campus computer center would be the focus of this grant. The grant funds will provide solar energy, computers and enhanced Wifi connections to or facilitate access to digital resources.
