Funding Area: Poverty Alleviation
Andando works to alleviate poverty through community development in rural Senegal. By focusing on the growth of the whole village – water, health, education, agriculture, literacy, and small business – and developing long-term partnerships, Andando strives to create thriving communities rooted in sustainable solutions that give ownership to those participating in our programs. Andando was founded by the Kiker family out of a deep connection with and love for the people of Senegal. Through 25 years of visiting and building friendships they saw the struggles of everyday life in the rural areas and the disproportionate burdens placed on women and girls who would spend hours every day just fetching water. Andando currently operates in the Kaolack and Podor regions of Senegal.
Projects We Support
Dry Land Aquaculture Project Expansion to Northern Senegal
2024 – 2025 Grant
Our women’s cooperative garden initiative, currently encompassing 40 villages, establishes thriving permaculture gardens which substantially improve nutrition and income for rural families. In our Kaolack region of operation, four of Andando’s women’s gardens have been participating in a pilot aquaculture program since January 2022. All four of these gardens are now successfully producing profitable harvests of Tilapia every 4-6 months.
In this proposed expansion, Andando will integrate aquaculture into two of the existing cooperative women’s gardens in Podor.
2025 – 2026 Grant
This follow-up grant will enable Andando to introduce our refined 3-basin rotational aquaculture system to one of our cooperative gardens in Keur Socé and establish fingerling production at our Keur Socé Training Center. By doing so, we aim to empower 100-150 rural women, directly benefiting over 500 family members through improved nutrition, increased incomes, and sustainable agricultural practices. The establishment of local fingerling production will support this new aquaculture integration along with providing Andando’s existing aquaculture-integrated gardens in the region with a more consistent supply of high quality fingerlings. Surplus fingerlings will be produced to facilitate aquaculture adoption by private entrepreneurs as well, promoting further expansion throughout the region. This project, combined with our initial aquaculture activities in Keur Soce, and our current expansion to Podor, will provide two robust case studies for the efficacy of this integrated system, while also creating the infrastructure necessary for scaling the initiative in Keur Soce and beyond.
