Our Letter of Inquiry submission period is now closed.

The 2024 – 2025 grant cycle will open on July 22, 2024.

Please read about our grants before completing this assessment.

This assessment tool will help you decide if you should submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to the Tomberg Family Philanthropies. Due to the small size and limited number of our grants, we are unable to support some types of programs and organizations. We have developed this qualification assessment in order to help organizations avoid spending time on grant requests that we are unlikely to be able to fund. If you are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry to us, this should not be seen as a judgement on the value of your program, and we wish you success in finding funding from other sources.

Please take this assessment before submitting your Letter of Inquiry to us.

#1. Is your organization a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the United States, a foreign organization with a fiscal sponsor that is a nonprofit registered in the United States, or a government entity or public institution in the United States such as a public school or university?

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry.

The Tomberg Family Philanthropies only makes grants to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations based in the United States and certain government entities in the United States such as public schools and universities.

#2. Is your organization a religious organization (such as a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, religious society, religious co-ordinating group or similar establishment), or is the project run by a religious organization?

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry.

We do not make grants to religious organizations or fund projects run by religious organizations.

#3. What is the funding area of your program?

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry.

We only support projects in the areas of education, the environment, health and poverty alleviation.

#4. Is the amount of the grant you would be requesting between $5,000 and $20,000 USD?

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry for this amount.

Our grants normally range from $5,000 to $20,000.

#5. What is your organization's administration and fundraising percentage?
The usual calculation is: [ (administration expenses + fundraising expenses) / total expenses ] X 100. This is for the organization, not the project. You can usually find this number in your annual I.R.S. filing.

If your administration and fundraising percentage is over 50% you are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry without prior approval of an exception.

If your percentage is between 25% and 50%, you may be eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry but you will be required to provide an explanation.

#6. We normally only consider projects where our contribution would be at least 5% of the project's total expenses. Given our $20,000 maximum grant amount, this means that your project's total expenses may not exceed $400,000. What are your project's projected total expenses?

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry without prior approval of an exception.

#7. Due to the limited size and number of our grants, we normally are not able to support ongoing operations of existing programs. We normally only consider projects that would be considered pilot programs, support of new programs, capacity building, demonstration projects, program evaluations, expansions of existing projects with demonstrable results into new geographic areas or markets, or similar types of projects. For what type of project would you be requesting funding?

We take a 'pilot' to mean a first delivery of a new program or offering, intended to serve as a test of the program; test results from the pilot inform the decision to continue delivering the program as is, or with changes.

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry without prior approval of an exception.

In most cases, the Tomberg Family Philanthropies initially will make grants to support individual projects only. We generally will not make grants to fund the general operational expenses of non-profit organizations. After the first year, if continued funding is approved, a portion of the grants may be designated for capacity building efforts.

#8. Equal Opportunity and anti-discrimination regardless of race, color, gender, national origin, age, handicap, gender identity or sexual orientation are core values of the Tomberg Family Philanthropies. Will your organization be willing to abide by these values if provided with a grant?

#9. I confirm that I understand that grants for this funding cycle will not be made until March, 2025 and that this timing is appropriate for the project I am proposing.

You are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry

We can only accept Letters of Inquiry for projects whose timing is appropriate for our grant cycle.

#10. I confirm that I understand that we will accept only a set number of Letters of Inquiry this cycle, approximately 50, and that no additional applications will be accepted after that number of applications is reached.
