Projects We Support

Mentor and Scholarship Program

Our mentoring program was designed specifically to meet the needs of disadvantaged teenage girls in the nation’s public high schools. The majority of our mentees come from low-income minority families in urban and suburban neighborhoods. More than 80% of our mentees qualify for free or reduced-cost school lunches, and nearly 50% come from single parent households. The girls we serve face an array of daunting challenges – not only poverty, but also abuse, homelessness, and exposure to gangs, substance abuse and delinquency. Nearly half of our mentees are the first generation in their family to graduate from high school and 64% are the first generation to pursue higher education. Our goals include reducing dropout rates, increasing high school graduation rates, and increasing the number of graduates to pursue higher education. Our program empowers girls to make positive choices about their education, relationships, work, health, responsibility and other issues they will face as adults. Through sustained supportive relationships with mentors and peers, our mentees gain confidence and knowledge that help them improve school performance and develop the attitudes and behavior that will allow them to achieve success in school, work and adult life.

Support Dates: March, 2015 – March, 2016
