Projects We Support

Campaign to Ban Plastic Microbeads

You are probably washing your face or brushing your teeth with plastic microbeads. And it is poisoning the ocean. Did you know that personal care products sold around the world contain microplastic particles used as exfoliants? These tiny plastic beads (listed as polyethylene and polypropylene in the ingredients) are used in face and body scrubs and toothpaste. They are washed directly down the drain and into our water systems, where they harm our waterways and the animals that live there. It is one of the most dangerous sources of plastic pollution, and we need your help to ban these products from commerce completely. Pressure by 5 Gyres and other groups has resulted in more and more of these companies choosing to replace microbeads with natural alternatives, but we still need support to pass a national ban.

Support Dates: March, 2015 – February, 2016

Microbead-Free Campus Kits

The MicrobeadFree Campus Kits use a grassroots approach to empower students to effect change on a local scale. The kit will educate students on the issue of plastic microbeads and provide them with various onramps to take action against microbeads. The kits will also include stepbystep instructions for how to ban the sale of microbeads on campus stores. 5 Gyres is developing the kit in collaboration with UCLA students who successfully passed an on campus ban of products containing microbeads (http://test.5gyres.org/blog/posts/2015/8/12/ucla). Students who download the kits will receive ongoing staff support and leadership training to ensure the success of their projects.

Support Dates: March, 2016 – April, 2017
