What is Philanthropy?

1 : goodwill to fellowmen; especially : active effort to promote human welfare
2 a : a philanthropic act or gift b : an organization distributing or supported by philanthropic funds.

Philanthropy goes beyond charity by attempting to address the underlying causes of social problems rather than only providing immediate assistance to those in need.

What is Charity?

1 : generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also : aid given to those in need b : an institution engaged in relief of the poor c : public provision for the relief of the needy


The Tomberg Scholarships have been established for executive master’s students in Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) residing outside of Indiana who demonstrate financial need. Up to four scholarships will be awarded each year and are renewable.



The Tomberg Family Philanthropies makes grants to organizations working on projects in the areas of the environment, poverty alleviation, health and education.

It consists of two separate charitable funds, The Marty Tomberg Charitable Fund and the Philip and Helen Brecher Charitable Fund.

We agree with the Nobel Committee that "every single individual on earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life."
